To allowed training to continue, NAEMT is now allowing courses to be conducted through Virtual Instructor Lead Training (VILT).
For those programs that require skill stations or equipment to conduct the course, the students must have access to whatever is required and can be observed on a one-on-one basis with the instructor (or whatever is acceptable per local/federal government regulations).
If necessary, the instructor can use video conferencing to watch the skills being performed.
If you are interested in putting together a small group to do AMLS, PHTLS, GEMS or any of the other NAEMT programs, please let us know.
----------------------------------------
Due to lack of training in some areas, NAEMT is allowing expired cards to be extended for 6 months to give the provider time to find a refresher course if necessary.

COVID 19 Testing: Promises, Problems, Potential
March 30, 2020
The FDA has approved the use of hydroxychloroquine sulfate for COVID-19 cases. Two large Pharmacies have donated over 30 million doses of the drug to the Department of Health and Human Services. The drug is currently being tested in New York.
This is NOT the same as the chloroquine phosphate associated with aquariums! I received notice today of the health risks and even death that has been associated with taking the non-prescription substance. Only take the prescription hydroxychloroquine sulfate.
Hydroxychloroquine helps to inhibit the entry of the virus into the cell.and hopefully prevents the RNA stand from starting the destructive process in the alveoli. It is not without side effects such as cardiotoxicity with long term use or long QT syndromes.
More studies are need to determine its effectiveness.
CDC news regarding the Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C)
Distance Learning hours are no longer restricted to 35 hours for the Paramedic, but you may do all of your hours through Distance Learning while we are making exceptions for COVID-19.
With the need to distance ourselves from each other, the NREMT allowed a "Provisional" status to those who passed the cognitive exam by July 1, 2020. What this means is that your Psychomotor test is not required while we are being restricted. The bans have now been lifted, you will have a certain amount of time to complete your psychomotor testing to be taken off of a "Provisional" status, and be idientified as a registered provider under NREMT. The deadline date for the psychomotor exam is December 31, 2020.
Here is a link for NREMT to clarify any questions you might have:
Added note: Limited psychomotor exams are allowed by the NREMT with strict guidelines to follow. More info can be found here
"Course eligibility and examination validity deadlines for all candidates with a course completion date between March 1, 2018 and August 31, 2020 will be set at 30 months. For example, a course completion date of July 18, will be valid through January 2021."

NEW RULE:
Emergency Medical Services Rules of Covid-19 Response; 511-9-2-0.2-.20
(e)Services who have a severe shortage of personnel are now allowed to utilize other heathcare providers, such as an RN, PA or Dr as the second partner for a paramedic. They may also use a certified FF or LEO as a driver only. There are specific steps for utilization of the above.
Patients transported to a hospital must have their PCR or other information form submitted to the ED at time of transfer. They cannot do their reports later and then forward to ED. We are going back to the requirement that used to be in place when we were doing paper copies before leaving the ED.
Your patient information must be logged in GEMSIS within 24 hours of patient contact.
The Rule in its entirety can be seen on the DPH website for OEMS-T HERE
Scroll down and you'll find the link in the middle of the page.

American Heart Association Update
AHA is following the recommendations of the CDC. They are advising to not do any procedure/treatment that might cause aerosolization. Consider very early intubation on a cardiac arrest and if possible have a HEPA filter on the exhalation port of the BVM.
* With all these recommendations, I would like for everyone to consider using the fan in the back of the ambulance when transporting anyone. With doors shut to the driver's compartment, this will create a negative pressure room for you.- AE
