After over 30 years of teaching EMTs and Paramedics, one of the most frustrating things I have discovered about educating adults is the end result of many when taking the certification exam. The student’s knowledge base appears to be strong, yet they still fail the exam in their first or subsequent attempts. What seems to be the main issue with them is not that they received inadequate training in some cases, but that they are not ‘test-takers’. I’ve never heard one student ever say that they loved taking exams. They all have the same phobias of facing an evaluation of their cognitive or psychomotor skills.
We all wish our students to be successful; whether it is for statistical reasons, or a genuine desire to see them out practicing on the streets. Sometimes however, they need just a little bit more help and preparation before taking boards. Over a period of time, the rapport we develop with our students allows them enough trust to follow where we lead, but it also makes it difficult for us to be as objective as we need to be. I have found that bringing in other instructors helps give them a better understanding of a concept. At the very least it exposes the students to another point of view.
Review sessions are customized for each individual program. It is recommended that a 4 (four) hour session be scheduled just for the test-taking skills portion. Total program reviews or prepatory courses for licensure exams can be structured to meet the student's needs. Call for pricing, or feel free to send an e-mail inquiry.
